Blue Devils Travel to Raleigh for Raleigh Relays

DURHAM, N.C. -- Members of the Duke men's and women's track and field team are set to compete in the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C., Friday and Saturday. Over 110 Division I, II and III schools are expected to participate in the meet, with more than 4,000 competitors registered for the 58 scheduled events.

Many of Duke's middle-distance and distance runners make their 2014 outdoor season debut in Raleigh, including juniors Nate McClafferty and Brian Schoepfer, who are slated to compete in the open 1,500 and the 4x1,500 meter relay. Schoepfer and McClafferty each earned indoor All-ACC honors after placing sixth and seventh, respectively, at the ACC Indoor Championships in the mile.

Joining McClafferty and Schoepfer in the 4x1,500 are junior Henry Farley and freshman Stephen Shine, with both making 2014 outdoor debuts. The 4x800, comprised of sophomore Tommy Meister, freshman Dylan Murphy, freshman Alec Kunzweiler and junior Kyle Moran, marks the outdoor season opener for each member of the relay.

At the longer distances, graduate student Mike Moverman and junior Shaun Thompson look to open with a strong 5,000 Friday evening, while senior Brian Atkinson steps to the line for his first 10,000 of 2014. All three saw strong performances throughout the indoor campaign, and look to carry over the success into the outdoor season.

For the women, senior Ashley Berry returns as Duke's top returning steeplechase performer. Berry earned an eighth-place finish at last season's ACC Championships, clocking a time of 10:55.09. Berry opens competition with a personal-best time of 10:40.51.

In the field events, Duke's record holder in the hammer throw, senior Michelle Anumba, returns to the circle after opening the outdoor season at the Carolina Relays with an effort of 166-7.00 (50.78). Junior Stephanie Skove joins Anumba in the hammer throw, taking eighth at the Carolina Relays one week earlier with a throw of 134-2.00 (40.89).

Sophomore Carl Heinz represents Duke in the jumps Friday, entering the men's high jump. Heinz placed third at the Carolina Relays after a clearance of 6-7.50 (2.02).

The Blue Devils open competition Friday morning, with the first event set for 9:45 a.m.
