DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke track and field team sends 27 competitors, including 15 women and 12 men, to the 2014 NCAA East Preliminary Round meet in Jacksonville, Fla. The three-day meet is scheduled to run from Thursday, May 29, through Saturday, May 31.
The two NCAA preliminary round meets, divided between the east and the west, provide an opportunity for the top-12 finishers in each event at each site to qualify for the national championship meet in Eugene, Ore. The combined top 24 declared competitors in each event from the two sites will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Sixteen individuals and one relay qualified for the first round contest on the track. The Blue Devils showcase experience at the meet, with nine individuals, including sophomore Anima Banks (800), juniors Abby Farley (800; 4x400), Lauren Hansson (400; 4x400), Nate McClafferty (1,500), Elizabeth Kerpon (200; 4x400) and Shaun Thompson (5,000), senior Brian Atkinson (10,000) and graduate students Mike Moverman (5,000) and Juliet Bottorff (5,000; 10,000) boasting at least one appearance at the contest.
Seven individuals enter this weekend's competition for the first time in their collegiate careers, including freshmen Haley Meier (1,500) and Madeline Kopp (400; 4x400), sophomores Madison Granger (1,500) and Robert Rohner (100), redshirt sophomore Teddi Maslowski (400 hurdles, 100 hurdles), senior Ashley Berry (3,000 steeple) and graduate student Audrey Huth (1,500).
In the throws, Duke is represented by five participants. Redshirt sophomore Thomas Lang is set to compete in the javelin after winning the conference title in the same event earlier this season while fellow redshirt sophomore Stephen Boals is scheduled to participate in both the shot put and discus for the second consecutive year at the first round meet. Joining Boals in the discus is redshirt senior Austin Gamble, who is slated to compete in the first round meet for the third time in his career.
For the women, freshman Christine Streisel enters the first regional preliminary meet of her collegiate career, competing in the javelin Thursday afternoon. In the women's shot put, redshirt senior Michelle Anumba enters the event scheduled for Saturday. Anumba last competed in the NCAA East Preliminary Round Meet in 2012, when she placed 12th in the shot put and 25th in the hammer throw.
Duke, which is the only team at the meet to enter three high jumpers in the contest, is represented by senior Tanner Anderson, redshirt junior Michael Krone and sophomore Carl Heinz. Anderson and Krone both boast a wealth of experience at the regional first round meet, with a combined six trips between the two. Their counterpart, Heinz, takes to the high jump apron in Jacksonville for the first time in his career.
Redshirt sophomore Karli Johonnot is scheduled to compete in the women's high jump, set for 5 p.m. Friday. The Las Vegas, Nev., native owns a season-best clearance of 5-10.00 (1.78).
The Blue Devils will be represented in the pole vault by sophomore Megan Clark in the women's contest, while senior Justin Amezquita is slated to participate in the men's pole vault. Clark, who owns the third-highest clearance in the nation this season at 14-7.25 (4.45), competes in the second NCAA East Preliminary Round Meet of her collegiate career. Clark also heads into this weekend's meet with the top clearance in the region. Amezquita also owns experience at the first round meet, entering the competition for the third consecutive year.
Duke enters this weekend's meet with a total of 15 All-NCAA Regional honorees in school history, including four on the men's side and 11 on the women's side. Liz Wort last won an NCAA East Preliminary Round title in 2007, winning the steeplechase.
