CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After securing wins in five events on the first day of the Carolina Relays, the Duke track and field teams picked up three more victories on the second and final day. Juniors Michael Foley and Megan Clark picked up wins in the field events, while senior Chloe Maleski finished first in the women's mile.
In the first field event of the morning, Foley topped his competitors in the men's hammer throw with his mark of 175-11.00 (53.62), besting NC State's Josh Davis' second-place performance [175-1.00 (53.37)] by less than one foot. On the women's side, teammate Stephanie Skove joined Foley with a top-three finish of her own. Skove, a senior out of Eatontown, N.J., threw the hammer 154-6.00 (47.09), setting a personal record and remaining in the No. 5 spot on Duke's all-time list.
Clark picked up right where she left off during the indoor season, clearing 14-3.25 (4.35) to finish first among the field in the women's pole vault. The Fort Benning, Ga., native is coming off an indoor season that included a gold medal at the ACC Championships, a silver medal at the NCAA Championships and being named the ACC Women's Indoor Field Performer of the Year. Competing with Clark, freshman Madison Heath placed fifth with a height of 12-3.50 (3.75). In the men's pole vault, freshman Jordan Hatfield finished second in his first outdoor competition as a collegiate athlete, registering a clearance of 14-9.00 (4.50).
On the track, three Blue Devil women ran the mile, led by Maleski and fellow senior Julianna Miller placing first and second. Maleski crossed the finish line in 5:15.49 to win the race, while Miller clocked a time of 5:20.19 to finish right behind her teammate. Freshman Callie Wynn ran a time of 5:22.93 to take fourth place.
Duke featured another strong group performance in the women's 800, taking third through seventh place. Leading the charge was sophomore Hannah Meier, finishing third with a time of 2:11.22, followed by seniors Jessica Buttinger (2:13.46), Callie Francis (2:14.30) and Abby Farley (2:14.62) and junior Allison Sturges (2:16.32).
