RALEIGH, N.C. – The Duke track and field teams concluded the second and final day of the Raleigh Relays Saturday, hosted by NC State. The Blue Devils finished the two-day event with a total of 15 top-10 finishes.
The Blue Devils produced a number of fantastic relay performances, highlighted by Duke winning the men's 4x800 with a time of 7:36.70. Sophomore Alec Kunzweiler started the race with his 1:56.63 split before handing off to senior Henry Farley. Farley logged a time of 1:54.66 on the second leg to put Duke in third place halfway through the race. The Blue Devils dropped to fourth after a 1:54.21 third leg from freshman Kyle Francis. Loyola (Ill.) sat in first place with more than a four-second lead on Duke, but freshman anchor Jordan Burton used a spectacular final leg to secure the victory. Burton, a Warwick, N.Y., native, finished the final 800-meter leg in 1:51.21 to move Duke up three spots and win the event.
In the women's 4x800, seniors Jessica Buttinger, Callie Francis and Abby Farley teamed up with sophomore Haley Meier to finish second, clocking a time of 9:07.22. Buttinger kicked off the relay with the fastest opening leg, running a 2:13.39, to give Duke the early lead. Francis notched a 2:21.25 split, moving the team back to fourth, but Meier brought Duke into third heading into the anchor leg with a split of 2:16.77. Farley capped the race with a 2:16.32 split to earn the runner-up finish.
Duke recorded a third top-two relay performance in the men's 4x1,500. Freshmen Matt Luppino and Sean Kelly and seniors Henry Farley and Brian Schoepfer placed second with a time of 16:03.89, trailing only Eastern Michigan's 15:57.04. In the women's 4x200, Francis, graduate student Dorehn Coleman, senior Alexis Roper and freshman Jasmine Hill finished eighth with a time of 1:41.70.
In the individual running events, Matthew Rodio placed eighth in the men's 400m hurdles, with the junior out of Oceanport, N.J., clocking a personal-best time of 54.58. Haley Meier finished 13th in the women's 800, crossing the finish line in 2:14.14.
Duke picked up two top-three finishes in the javelin competitions, with redshirt junior Thomas Lang taking second in the men's event and sophomore Christine Streisel placing third for the women. Lang launched the javelin 213-0 (64.93), while Streisel notched a mark of 151-9 (46.27).
Following the postponement of the men's pole vault Friday, sophomore Connor Hall returned Saturday to compete. Hall cleared 15-5.00 (4.70) to place eighth overall.
In the men's triple jump, graduate student Alex Jebb added his name to the Duke record books with the best performance of his career. Jebb placed 12th with a jump of 46-6.00 (14.17), the fourth-best outdoor mark in school history.
The Blue Devils will continue the 2015 outdoor season next weekend in High Point, N.C., competing at the Vertklasse Meeting April 3-4.
