CLEMSON, S.C. – The Duke rowing team turned in a pair of performances Friday that resulted in trips to the ACC Championship Grand Finals on Saturday on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C. The Blue Devils' first and second varsity 8 boats will move on to the Grand Finals after qualifying Friday evening.
Duke, which entered the league's championship event as the No. 6 seed, lined up in four-boat heats in the 3V8, 2V4, V4, 2V8 and V8. Virginia was the No. 1 seed, and No. 2 team nationally, and claimed X of the six fastest times in each of the races. Other nationally ranked squads in this year's ACC championship field include Syracuse at No. 17 and Notre Dame at No. 19. The Cavaliers, Orange and Irish were the top three seeds for the ACC Championship.
Duke's third varsity eight started the ACC Championship for the Blue Devils with a time of 7:22.00 to place 4th in its heat and 8th in the eight-boat field. Virginia posted the fastest time in 6:25.3. Duke will compete in lane 3 in Saturday's Petite Final.
Duke's second varsity four clocked out in 7:58.00 to claim 4th in its heat. Louisville won the heat with a time of 7:19.6, edging second-place Notre Dame by just over a second. This is the first year the 2V4 has been part of the ACC Championship. The Blue Devils will occupy lane 3 in Saturday's Petite Final. Virginia claimed first in Friday's races with a time of 7:05.5.
In the varsity four, Duke took 4th in its heat with a mark of 7:36.2. Boston College edged Duke by four seconds to beat out the Blue Devils for a place in Saturday's Grand Final. The V4 will take the 3rd lane Saturday. Virginia added another win to its total with a final time of 7:01.0.
The Blue Devils' 2V8 were the first Duke boat to land in a Grand Final with a time of 6:33.9 for 3rd in its heat and fifth overall. Duke finished ahead of Boston College (6:43.0) and behind Syracuse (6:26.2) and Notre Dame (6:30.3) on Friday. The Cavaliers were the fastest boat Friday with a time of 6:21.8. The Blue Devils' 2V8 will fill lane one Saturday.
Finishing off the day was the event's premiere race, the V8. Duke's boat clocked out in 6:29.0 to take 3rd in its heat and 5th overall, en route to a spot in the Grand Final. The Blue Devils pushed ahead of Boston College, Clemson and Miami to earn a spot in the Grand Final, where the V8 will occupy the first lane Saturday. Virginia's crew had the fastest time Friday in 6:10.0.
Saturday's finals will be available on ESPN3 beginning at 8:05 a.m. ET with Dean Linke and Steve Pritzker handling the announcing duties.
