BOSTON, Mass. – The Duke track & field programs rounded out the final day of the ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston, Mass., at the Reggie Lewis Center, notching eight top-eight placings across the board Saturday. Overall, the Blue Devils combined for three ACC titles and 10 All-ACC accolades over the course of the three-day event.
The 16th-ranked Duke women finished the meet fifth in the team standings with 59 points, while the Blue Devil men took 12th with 26 points. Miami topped the women's field with 85 points, followed by Clemson (83), Notre Dame (82), Florida State (70) and Duke rounding out the top five. Syracuse scored 88 points to win the men's team title, while Clemson (76.5) took second, Virginia (64) placed third, NC State (62) finished fourth and Virginia Tech (58) captured fifth. The Duke women move to 71-5 (14-5 ACC) on the year, while the men's record now stands at 60-16 (7-12 ACC).
“I thought the women competed very well and scored about what we thought we would score coming into the meet,” head coach Norm Ogilvie said. “I don't think there were any real surprises, but there were a bunch of really good performances. We're pleased with where we finished. It's a very tough conference. If you looked at any number of indicators, we were probably about the fifth-best team in the conference, which is a good accomplishment … We've got a great shot at being a top-15 – and certainly a top-20 – type of team at the NCAAs in two weeks.”
Following a 2:07.93 performance in yesterday's preliminaries, senior Anima Banks claimed the silver medal in the women's 800 to highlight the day for Duke and earn eight team points, running a 2:05.70 to finish second only behind defending champion Hanna Green of Virginia Tech. Banks has been a consistent force in the event at the conference level during her time at Duke, as the All-ACC accolade marks the fourth of her career.
After advancing a pair of runners in the women's 400, sophomore Maddy Price and Madeline Kopp both earned second team All-ACC honors by finishing fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 54.56 and 54.65. Price's performance ranks fourth all-time in program history, while Kopp's showing is a season best for the Rochester, N.Y., product.
In the lone relay event of the day, Banks, Price and Kopp teamed with freshman MacKenzie Kerr to run a combined time of 3:40.06 and finish fourth, just missing All-ACC honors. Kopp paced the squad with her 54.04 split on the second leg, followed by Price's 54.27 anchor leg. In the men's race, Matthew Rodio, Brett Bofinger, Michael Wilson and Kyle Francis took second in the first heat before placing eighth overall with a time of 3:16.48. Bofinger and Wilson logged the fastest splits for the Blue Devils, running legs of 48.17 and 48.60, respectively.
Junior Alec Kunzweiler picked up a point for the Duke men in the men's mile, placing eighth with a personal-record time of 4:05.51. Kunzweiler's time is the fastest run by Blue Devil this season, besting his own time from Friday's prelims by nearly two seconds. Rounding out the individual races, senior William Hague ran the fastest 3,000 time by a Blue Devil this season, placing eighth in the first section and 21st overall in the men's race with a personal-best 8:17.06.
In the field events, redshirt junior Urina Harrell used a throw of 47-3.75 (14.42m) to place eighth in the women's shot put and register a point for the Blue Devils. Harrell recorded a mark of 46-8.00 (14.22m) on her second attempt to secure a spot in the finals before launching her best throw on her fourth toss. On the men's side, redshirt senior Stephen Boals also placed eighth in the shot put with a distance of 56-10.25 (17.33m). Boals produced his best mark on his second attempt and entered finals in seventh before slipping one spot.
Next up, qualifying members of the Duke track & field teams will conclude the indoor season by traveling to Hoover, Ala., for the NCAA Indoor Championships March 11-12.
