BALTIMORE, Md.—Duke senior midfielder Myles Jones scored five goals and added three assists to lead the seventh-ranked Blue Devils to a 15-6 victory over No. 9 Loyola this afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex. The Blue Devils stopped their two-game losing skid and grabbed their first ranked victory of the year.
Duke improves to 5-3 on the year, while Loyola drops to 4-2. The 15 goals allowed by the Greyhounds were a season-high, while the six goals scored by Loyola were the fewest of the year. Jones' five goals and eight points matched his career highs as he moved into the lead among active players in points with 192.
Justin Guterding and Jack Bruckner added three goals and an assist apiece, while Case Matheis had two goals and an assist to round out the attacking trio. Junior Kyle Rowe was outstanding at the faceoff X, winning 19-of-23 restarts and picking up 15 ground balls.
Guterding opened the scoring for the Blue Devils on an assist from Bruckner just 39 seconds into the game. After nearly nine minutes of scoreless lacrosse, Loyola tied the game before the Blue Devils went on a 3-0 run for a 4-1 lead.
The three-goal advantage was Duke's largest since the Mercer win Feb. 29. The Greyhounds pulled within two twice more, but a 3-0 run in the final 4:12 of the second quarter to put the Blue Devils up 8-3 at halftime.
Jones, Bruckner and Guterding all scored for the Blue Devils in a span of 1:50, while rookie CJ Carpenter notched his first career point on an assist. Defensively, Duke held Loyola to just 16 shots in the half and only six in the second quarter, thanks in large part to Rowe winning all eight of his faceoffs.
The scoring run continued for the Blue Devils in the third as Duke scored the quarter's first three goals to open up its lead to 11-3. Jones had a hand in two of the three tallies, scoring one and assisting on another.
Duke added one more in the third quarter and three more in the fourth en route to the nine-goal victory. The nine-goal margin is the second largest of the past 12 meetings, while this is the first Blue Devil win in Baltimore since 2010.
Pat Spencer paced the Loyola offense with two goals. In goal, Duke junior Danny Fowler made seven saves, while Loyola goaltender Grant Limone had eight in 38 minutes of action. Sam Beazell had three off the bench. Limone also notched an assist in the loss.
Duke returns home for a four-game homestand, starting with Georgetown March 19 at 1 p.m., and Air Force March 22 at 7 p.m.
