DURHAM, N.C. – After running the first outdoor 10,000 of his collegiate track career Friday at the Raleigh Relays, graduate student Shaun Thompson was tabbed the ACC Men's Track Co-Performer of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
Thompson, who redshirted both the 2015 outdoor and 2016 indoor track & field campaigns, returned to the track in spectacular fashion, placing second in his 10K debut with a time 29:02.18. The performance ranks as the second-best time in Duke history and also the second-fastest clocking in NCAA Division I this season, trailing only Kentucky's Jacob Thomson who won the race with a 29:01.34 showing.
Thompson's race featured a consistent pace throughout, passing the first 3,200-meter mark at 9:26.24 before covering the next two 3,200 meters in 9:26.00. The graduate student out of Baldwinsville, N.Y., then closed out the race by clocking a 10:09.54 split over the final 3,600 meters, highlighted by a 1:00.49 on the final lap to cement his second-place finish.
Thompson and the rest of the Blue Devils will return to action this weekend by hosting North Carolina and Michigan for the Battle of the Blues April 1-2 at Morris Williams Track & Field Stadium. Admission to the meet is free and will be broadcast live on ESPN3 Saturday.
