DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina's Patrick Kelly scored two minutes into the first overtime period to lift the 15th-ranked Tar Heels to a 17-16 road win over No. 9 Duke in ACC men's lacrosse action on Friday night as 3,957 fans looked on at Koskinen Stadium.
The Tar Heels improve to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in league action while the Blue Devils fall to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in ACC play.
Duke's Jack Bruckner sent the game into extra time with a goal with 7.6 seconds left in regulation. The Blue Devils secured the overtime faceoff, but a Myles Jones shot was saved by Tar Heel netminder Colin Reder to provide North Carolina possession. After a timeout, Kelly scooped up an errant pass off the turf near midfield, raced down the left-hand alley and beat Duke goalie Danny Fowler for the game-winning goal.
The loss overshadowed a career evening for Jones, who produced 11 points on five goals and six assists. Bruckner finished with three goals and one assist while Justin Guterding added four markers. The 11 points tie the Duke record for points in a game and marks the first time a Blue Devil has done so since both Ned Crotty and Max Quinzani did so in 2010. It is the 10th time a Duke player has scored 11 points in a game.
North Carolina held leads of 5-3 after one period and 8-6 at intermission, but Duke scored five straight goals to claim an 11-8 advantage on a tally by Jones with 5:33 left in the third period. The Tar Heels responded with a 6-1 spurt to claim a 14-12 lead on Brett Bedard's marker with 10:51 remaining in the fourth quarter.
After the two squads traded the next four goals and North Carolina kept its two-point lead, Jones found the back of the net to pull Duke to within 16-15 at the 1:14 mark. The Tar Heels held possession with 30 seconds left, but the Blue Devils forced a turnover on the endline which led to Bruckner's transition marker to tie the game.
For the Tar Heels, Steve Pontrello led the way with six goals while Luke Goldstock chipped in one goal and four assists.
In goal for Duke, Fowler finished with 12 saves. Reder, who replaced UNC starter Brian Balkam (2 saves & 6 goals allowed in 23:24), was credited with 10 saves – including five in the fourth quarter – while allowing 10 goals.
North Carolina's Stephen Kelly secured 20-of-35 faceoffs and logged 12 ground balls and one goal. Duke countered with Kyle Rowe, who won 15-of-33 restarts and posted six ground balls.
Duke returns to action on Sunday, April 10 at Notre Dame. Faceoff is set for 12 p.m., on ESPNU.
