NORWALK, Calif. – In the first of what will be four consecutive days of competition, the Duke track & field program was represented by three multi-event athletes Wednesday at the Mt. Sac Relays in Norwalk, Calif. After the first session, redshirt senior Teddi Maslowski is on pace to break her own school record in the heptathlon and sits 11th overall and second among collegians in the standings after four events.
Maslowski picked up 1,039 points in the first event, completing the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 13.58, before clearing 5-3.75 (1.62m) in the high jump for 759 points. The Burgettstown, Pa., product then set personal bests in the next two events, scoring 618 points in the shot put with a throw of 37-2.50 (11.34m) and capping the day with a time of 23.80 in the 200 for 1,000 points, the third-fastest time in Duke history. Maslowski's day-one score of 3,416 is five points better than her total after the first session of last year's Mt. Sac Relays when she went on to set the current Duke record with 5,706 points.
Competing alongside Maslowski in the heptathlon, classmate Karli Johonnot heads into the second day 14th overall in the standings. After a 14.47 in the hurdles and a leap of 5-7.25 (1.71m) in the high jump to compile 1,780 points after the first two events, Johonnot launched the shot put 40-8.25 (12.40m) for 688 points. The Las Vegas native added 787 points in the 200, clocking a 26.12, to end her day with a score of 3,255.
Representing the Duke men, junior Chaz Hawkins ranks fifth in the California Invitational Decathlon Section A halfway through the event with 3,740 points. Hawkins opened the competition with the fastest time in the 100, running a wind-aided 10.82 to register 901 points, and then picked up 802 points with a wind-aided mark of 22-9.50 (6.95m) in the long jump. Moving on to the shot put, the Franklin, Tenn., native set a personal best with a toss of 38-5.75 (11.73m) for 590 points, followed by a height of 5-8.00 (1.73m) for 569 points in the high jump. Hawkins closed out the first day of action with a 48.64 in the 400 for 878 points.
The Mt. Sac Relays will continue Thursday for the Blue Devils with the final day of the heptathlon and decathlon events, along with graduate student Shaun Thompson running the men's 10,000.
