DURHAM, N.C. β Behind Duke's stellar defense and sophomore Leah Crouse's goal, fourth-ranked Duke defeated 22nd-ranked Old Dominion,1-0, Sunday afternoon at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium on Senior Day.
Crouse scored her eighth goal of the season in the 28th minute, gathering a loose ball inside the circle and connecting with the far-left side of the cage to put Duke up 1-0. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Sammi Steele totaled two saves in a shutout performance, the 23rd of her career.
"We were disappointed with our offensive connection this afternoon," said head coach Pam Bustin. "It's hard, we hit more feet than we did stick to stick passing. I think it's just the rhythm and getting our midfield connected with our forward line better and quicker. But I am pleased with how we pressed and how we came up with the ball. In the midfield, we defended their long ball, which can be very dangerous, but we just have to get back to the connection."
Crouse has now notched eight points and four goals in the last three games. Duke outshot the Monarchs 12-3, and led in penalty corners 2-0.
Following the game, Duke honored its six seniors at midfield, including Hattie Bevan, Kirby Comizio, Margaux Paolino, Haley Schleicher, Steele and Jillian Wolgemuth.
"We started all six seniors today so that tells you about the ability of this group to play an influence and have success for this program," Bustin said. "Obviously players like Jill, Margaux, Haley and Sammi and the addition of Hattie and Kriby getting in today, they're drivers of what we do this season and we go as they go."
The Blue Devils improved to 10-3 overall on the year, while Old Dominion fell to 7-5.
Duke is back in action Friday, Oct. 18 on the road at ninth-ranked Virginia. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. on the ACC Network.
