HARRISONBURG, Va. β Two early goals and a shutout performance from the Duke defense lifted the fourth-ranked Blue Devils over James Madison, 2-0, at the JMU Field Hockey Complex Sunday afternoon.
"After Friday's loss, the team really did come together and continued to set some goals and realign some commitments to their game," said head coach Pam Bustin. "I thought today we started off on the right foot, scoring a couple early goals in the first quarter."
Less than a minute into the opening quarter, sophomore Leah Crouse recorded her ninth goal of the season to put Duke up 1-0 early. Crouse drove toward the right side of the goal and forced the goalie out, lifting ball over her for the score. Sophomore Noor van de Laar put the Blue Devils up 2-0 later in the first quarter at the 7:38 mark, as she gathered a rebound off a corner shot from senior Haley Schleicher and connected with the back of the cage for her fourth goal of the season.
The 2-0 score remained the same after the second quarter and the Blue Devils went into halftime leading in shots, 3-2, and corners 3-1.
Duke held James Madison to four shots in the second half and kept the Dukes scoreless for its seventh shutout of the season. Redshirt senior Sammi Steele tallied two saves in a complete game effort, her 58th win in goal as a Blue Devil.
"Sammi definitely had some key moments and saves today, especially toward the end and on corners," said Bustin. "I thought Jillian Wolgemuth was exceptional defensively today and really made a difference for us."
The win improved Duke's record to 11-4 overall on the year, while James Madison fell to 6-8. James Madison led 6-4 in shots, while both teams recorded three corners.
Duke is back in action Saturday, Oct. 26 at home against ACC foe Louisville. Start time is set for 1:30 p.m. on the ACCN.
