DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke track & field team kicked off the first day of the Virginia Tech Invitational Friday evening in Blacksburg, Va., with one school record and multiple performances that rank on the program's all-time list.
In his first time competing in the 300m this season, junior
Miles Mingo posted the fastest time in school history with a 34.28 finish. Mingo surpassed the previous record of 34.29 set by Daniel King in 2007.
Competing on the women's side was senior
Brittany Aveni, who etched her name in the record books as well with a time of 38.53, which ranks third all-time in Duke history.
Senior
Matt Wisner continued his strong start to the season Friday. After placing first in the mile last week at the Carolina Challenge, Wisner clocked the fifth-fastest time in program history in the men's 1000m with a mark of 2:25.15. Wisner's time placed him second in Friday's race, while freshman
Luke Spurrier earned fourth place with a time of 2:26.96.
In the men's 3000m, junior
Alex Miley (8:23.15) and senior
Tom Sullivan (8:31.73) both recorded personal bests while posting a top-10 finish.
Senior
Veronica Brtek set a new personal record in the women's mile at 5:14.01.
The field events were once again highlighted by redshirt-junior
Ben Beatty, who followed up a career-best throw last week with a toss of 17.92m (58-9.5), the third-best mark in program history.
Sophomore
Cole Rowan had a strong showing in the men's pole vault, clearing a seasonal-best 4.70m (15-5).
"Tonight was a solid first night at the Virginia Tech Invitational," said Director of Track & Field
Norm Ogilvie. "Our team had some record-setting performances, notably by
Miles Mingo in the 300m. In addition to those earning a spot in the record books,
Luke Spurrier recorded the fastest time ever by a Duke freshman in the 1000m with a 2:26.96 time. We look forward to competing again tomorrow, with some repeating participants and some who will enter the day with fresh legs."
Duke will compete in the second leg of the Virginia Tech Invitational Saturday beginning at 11 a.m., starting with field events.
