DURHAM – Duke Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Shawn Wilbourn announced the signing of six-year-old Charlie Galuten. Charlie signed his draft day letter Saturday, Nov. 13, in the presence of his family and new teammates at Morris Williams Stadium.
"Even though we met Charlie last year, we were not able to host his signing day because of COVID," said junior
Lara Kohlenbach. "Saturday marked a very special day since Charlie officially signed his NLI and became a full member of the Duke track and field & cross country team."
Charlie, a native of Raleigh, N.C., was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in November 2018. He was bravely able to ring the bell, signifying the end of his treatment on March 11th, 2021. Charlie loves learning, playing with Transformers, and running laps with his team.
"His excitement and energy is incomparable and his dynamic personality contributes greatly to the team spirit," added Kohlenbach. "We're so happy to have you on the team, Charlie!"
Charlie and the Blue Devils were connected through Team IMPACT, a Boston-headquarted national nonprofit that pairs children facing serious and chronic illnesses with college athletic teams. Since 2011, Team IMPACT has matched over 2,200 children with more than 700 colleges and universities in 49 states, positively impacting more than 65,000 participating student athletes.
