DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 9 Duke women's lacrosse team (6-4, 2-4 ACC) dropped a 13-9 decision to No. 5 Notre Dame (5-2, 2-2 ACC) Sunday afternoon in Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils were led by freshman
Katie DeSimone with a hat trick with three goals and an assist for four points. Duke also received scoring contributions from
Caroline DeBellis (1),
Catherine Cordrey (1),
Gabby Rosenzweig (1),
Abby Landry (1),
Katie Cronin (1) and
Catriona Barry (1) while Rosenzweig also contributed two assists.
The Fighting Irish held much of the possession in the first half as they outshot Duke 21-8 and connected on eight goals to hold an 8-3 lead heading into intermission.
Duke was first on the board at 28:38 with DeBellis finding the back of the net off a pass from Rosenzweig before Notre Dame went on a 4-0 run over the next 12 minutes. DeSimone notched her first goal at 15:41 on a free-position attempt (4-2) before the Fighting Irish outscored the Blue Devils 4-1 to end the half.
Duke's defense held its opponent to just eight shots in the second stanza as they got hot to put up 17 attempts. The Blue Devils narrowed the deficit as Cordrey's man-up free-position goal made it 10-7 Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish rallied by scoring three consecutive goals to jump back in front by six with 3:50 remaining. Cronin and DeSimone answered in the final three minutes but the Blue Devils' comeback effort ran out of time.
Defensively for the Blue Devils,
Maddie Johnston collected three ground balls while
Kay Conway and Barry each added two.
Callie Humphrey caused five turnovers, which ties her career high and keeps her at eighth on Duke's all-time charts.
Maddie Jenner registered nine draw controls as Duke won the battle (13-12) and both squads were nearly flawless on clears.
In goal for Duke,
Sophia LeRose picked up eight saves while Notre Dame's Bridget Deehan had 12, including eight in the second half.
Notre Dame was led by Samantha Lynch with two goals and two assists.
Up next, Duke will travel to No. 4 Boston College Saturday, April 3 for a noon contest in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
