DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 7 Duke women's lacrosse team is set for the 2021 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament beginning with Mount St. Mary's Friday, May 14. Duke earned the No. 7 seed with opening draw set for 3 p.m., on ESPN3 at Koskinen Stadium in Durham.
OPENING DRAW
The two squads will face off for the first time in the programs' histories as Duke collected its 20th NCAA Tournament bid with a 9-7 record this spring. The winner of Friday's contest will face the winner of Maryland and High Point on Sunday at 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The fifth-seeded Duke women's lacrosse team dropped a hard fought 17-16 decision on a hot afternoon to fourth-seeded Notre Dame at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The seventh-ranked Blue Devils (9-7) were led by
Catriona Barry with four goals while
Maddie Jenner and
Olivia Carner each contributed three.
Abby Landry (2),
Catherine Cordrey (1),
Caroline DeBellis (1),
Cubby Biscardi (1) and
Katie DeSimone (1) rounded out Duke's goal scorers.
Gabby Rosenzweig dished two assists and Cordrey had one. Barry's four-goal performance tied her career high.
Duke trailed in the opening frame 12-7 and, much like the second meeting with North Carolina, used a strong second-half showing to put the Fighting Irish on their heels as the game came down to the wire. Ultimately, Notre Dame's Maddie Howe scored the eventual game winner with 2:59 remaining to advance to the ACC quarterfinals.
Goalkeeper
Stephanie Zempolich came up big for Duke, coming off the bench just before halftime and picked up a career-high three saves. She had previously only seen action in two games this season for 12 minutes total.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
Mount St. Mary's enters Friday's contest with a 14-2 overall record, have won 14 straight contests and will be playing in its first game in the NCAA Tournament since 2005 when the Mountaineers faced Northwestern.
Much like Duke, Mount St. Mary's features a balanced scoring attack with eight players with double-digit goals this season. The Mountaineers are led by Jordan Butler with 64 points (43 goals, 21 assists), Kate Kinsella with 57 points (42 goals, 15 assists) and Sara Moeller with 57 points (35 goals, 22 assists).
Goalkeeper Jenna Oler has accumulated over 700 minutes between the pipes this season as the Mount owns a 7.70 GAA. Oler is sixth in the nation with an 8.03 GAA.
DUKE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
The Blue Devils garnered the program's 20th selection to the NCAA Championship field, the first time since 2016, and are 24-19 all-time.
Under the direction of head coach
Kerstin Kimel, the program is 14-3 in first round play, having won 11 consecutive first-round matchups.
Duke has reached the semifinals four times (2005-2008) and the quarterfinals in 11 of its past 12 appearances and the semifinals in six of the past 12.
FIRST NCAA BERTH FOR THE 2021 SQUAD
Blue Devils will received their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2016 and the first appearance for the 2021 squad. The only member of the 2021 team to have NCAA Tournament experience outside of the coaches is graduate student
Gabby Rosenzweig.
Rosenzweig saw action in the NCAA Tournament as an undergrad at Penn in three of her four years - there was no NCAA Tournament in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through her tournament career, Rosenzweig has tallied five goals and 11 assists in four games.
DUKE DOMINANCE AT THE DRAW
The Blue Devils are 11-5 this season when winning the draw. Duke continues to rank among the national leaders in the category after claiming a 20-15 advantage at the draw in its last outing against the Fighting Irish. Duke won six of the final eight draws in the last 18:30 to put pressure on the Irish.
Junior
Maddie Jenner leads the ACC with 10.06 draw controls per game and is second nationally heading into Friday's contest. Jenner owns 161 draw controls this spring and has posted a season-high 15 three times this season, just one off her career high.
