BLACKSBURG, Va. – Ten top-five placements and four all-time program marks highlighted Duke track and field's first night of competition at the 15th annual Virginia Tech Elite Meet.
Duke kicked off Friday's events with the women's long jump where graduate student
Erin Marsh and senior
Isabel Wakefield collected the first two top-five finishes. Wakefield's personal-best 6.08m (19-11 ½ feet) leap was good for second place and slotted her at No. 4 all-time. Marsh took fourth in the event with a season best of 5.92m (19-5 ¼ feet).
The pair also finished in the top five among the field in the 60m hurdles. Wakefield earned second place in the event with an 8.26 second finish, but it was her preliminary time that secured a spot in the program record books. The senior moved into second all-time with an event PR of 8.20 seconds. Marsh clocked 8.42 seconds for a fourth-place finish.
Senior
Kelcie Simmons and junior
Ezra Mellinger finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the women's and men's 60m dash. Simmons ran in 7.60 seconds, while Mellinger dashed in 6.81 seconds – a personal best – to improve his No. 3 program mark.
The Blue Devil men made another change to the program's all-time 3000m run list following
