DURHAM – No. 14 Duke softball (25-6, 7-3 ACC) fell to No. 6 Florida State (25-6, 4-0 ACC), 4-1, in the series-opening game at Duke Softball Stadium on Friday night.
Florida State remains undefeated in ACC play after handing the Blue Devils' their third conference loss of the season to snap a five-game winning streak.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Florida State was quick to jump on the lead after a two-run home run from Michaela Edenfield in the top of the second put the Seminoles ahead, 2-0.
- The visitors added one additional run in both the fourth and fifth inning to extend their lead to 4-0.
- The Blue Devils finally broke through in the sixth when junior Francesca Frelick opened the frame singling to right field before moving into scoring position on a wild pitch. After the Seminoles tallied the first two outs of the inning, senior Gisele Tapia brought Frelick home following an RBI single to the right field gap.
- Duke tried to continue its rally in the sixth after sophomore Ana Gold walked to place runners on first and second with two outs. Unfortunately, the Seminoles recorded the final out of the frame to escape the threat and ultimately hold on for the win.
NOTES
- Junior pitcher Jala Wright was pinned with the loss and dips to 6-3 on the year.
- Frelick, Tapia and Gold each accounted for Duke's three hits in the contest.
- Tapia tallied her 24th RBI of the season.
