DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke Track and Field team will send 35 student-athletes to the historic 119th Penn Relays Carnival, April 25-27 in Philadelphia, Pa. The Blue Devils will field seven different relays, four women and three men, during the three-day competition.
The relays will be kicked off by the women's 4x100 meter relay team, which has set three school records over the course of the 2013 season and consists of senior LaCresha Styles and sophomores Baily Murphy, Lauren Hansson and Elizabeth Kerpon. The women's distance medley relay will also be competing Thursday and will include junior Rebecca Craigie in the 1200 leg, sophomore Alexis Roper in the 400, sophomore Abby Farley in the 800 and junior Brianna Welch in the 1600 leg.
On Friday, both the men's and women's sprint medley relay teams will compete. The women's squad consists of Murphy and Hansson in the 200 legs, Kerpon in the 400 leg and 2013 ACC Outdoor 800 champion Cydney Ross anchoring in the 800 leg. The men's team will be led off by senior Marcus Wright and junior Ben Raskin in the 200, redshirt junior Curtis Beach in the 400 leg and freshman Michal Filipzcak in the 800 anchor leg.
The Blue Devils are fielding three relays Saturday, including the men's 4xmile and the men's and women's 4x800 relays. Seniors Mike Moverman and James Kostelnik will team up with sophomores Nate McClafferty and Brian Schoepfer to compete in the men's 4xmile. The men's 4x800 relay will include Beach, Filipczak, sophomore Kyle Moran and freshman Tommy Meister while the women's squad includes Ross, Craigie,Farley and freshman Anima Banks.
Duke's individual event participants are highlighted by the throwers, high jumpers and pole vaulters. In the women's pole vault, senior Emily Mattoon and freshman Megan Clark will compete Thursday afternoon, while junior Justin Amezquita will vault Saturday afternoon and Beach will vault Friday morning. The men's high jump will begin Friday morning and includes junior Tanner Anderson and freshman Carl Heinz.
The throwers competing in the event include All-ACC honorees Stephen Boals in the men's shot put and Austin Gamble in the men's discus. Gamble won the event in 2010, being the first Duke athlete to win the discus since 1950.
The Penn Relays Carnival is the oldest track meet in the country, beginning in 1895, and features top high school, college and professional track athletes from over 60 countries.
