CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke track and field teams kicked off the 2015 outdoor season with a strong showing at the Carolina Relays Friday. Highlighting the first day of action were five first-place performances, including two from redshirt junior Stephen Boals.
Starting the meet with the javelin events, Duke placed first in both the men's and women's competitions. On the women's side, sophomore Christine Streisel secured the win with a throw of 155-7.75 (47.44), while graduate student Shannon Sullivan notched a mark of 132-7.25 (40.42). Redshirt junior Thomas Lang finished ahead in the men's field, tossing the javelin 217-6.25 (66.30). Competing outdoors for the first time collegiately, sophomore Kendall Gustafson placed fifth among the women, registering a throw of 119-8.25 (36.48), while freshman Travis Closs used a mark of 179-0.75 (54.58) to take fourth in the men's competition.
Boals carried the momentum from a successful indoor season into the start of the outdoor campaign with a win in the men's shot put. Boals tossed the implement 57-5.75 (17.52) to notch the victory, just short of his personal-best throw 57-9.50 (17.61). Competing for the first time as a Blue Devil, freshman Jack Maher produced a 48-1.25 (14.66) toss to place fourth overall. In the women's event, redshirt sophomore Urina Harrell came in second with a throw of 45-7.25 (13.90).
Boals followed his shot put performance with another first-place finish in the discus, notching a winning toss of 165-8.25 (50.50). Junior Michael Foley joined Boals in the event, taking fourth with a throw of 142-6.25 (43.44). Graduate student Erica Brand took second in the women's discus, notching a mark of 160-10.25 (49.03). Brand holds the Duke record in the event, owning a personal-best toss of 177-9.00 (54.17).
Picking up Duke's fifth win of the day, junior Maddie Morrow placed first in the women's high jump with a leap of 5-7.00 (1.70). For the Blue Devil men, freshman Andrew Pancoast finished second after clearing 6-2.00 (1.88).
In the long jump events, Duke again registered a pair of top-three finishes. Sophomore Karly Gregory took third among the women with a jump of 17-9.75 (5.43), while fellow sophomore Grant Emrie placed third in the men's event, notching a mark of 21-9.75 (6.65).
On the track, a combined seven Blue Devils ran the 200m races. On the men's side, sophomore Chaz Hawkins led Duke with a time of 22.02 to finish third, while senior Alexis Roper took third in the women's race, clocking a time of 25.31.
Duke will continue with the second and final day of the Carolina Relays Saturday, beginning with the men's 100m hurdles at 10:20 a.m.
