SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Duke volleyball team was outlasted by Syracuse, 3-2 (25-19, 18-25, 17-25, 25-15, 12-15), Sunday afternoon at the Women's Gym in Syracuse, N.Y. Sunday marks Duke's fourth five-set match in five games.
Duke (9-11, 7-8 ACC) was led by
Lily Cooper and
Moorea Wood with 10 kills each as Duke hit just .172 percent for the match.
Lizzie Fleming added nine kills and no errors to hit an impressive .375 percent as setter
Alex Springate dished 31 assists. Defensively, libero
Mackenzie Cole collected 26 digs, her fifth 20+ dig outing this year.
Fleming got it done on both sides of the ball as she also collected seven blocks while Cooper brought in four to help limit the Orange to a .126 hitting clip.
Duke came out to start the match with a .312 hitting percentage with 14 kills as
Ade Owokoniran downed four kills as Fleming and Cooper each added three.
The Blue Devils struggled offensively in the second and third sets as they combined for 17 hitting errors.
In the fourth set, Duke picked up its offense as Wood came off the bench and tallied four kills on no errors to hit .500 percent. Fleming's blocking abilities were on full display as she reeled in four to help limit the Orange to a .000 hitting percentage.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the decisive fifth set with six tied scores and four lead changes. A 4-0 Orange run would help propel them to victory as Duke dropped the fifth set 15-12 on an error.
The Orange were led by Abby Casiano and Viktoriia Lokhmanchuk with 14 and 13 kills, respectively.
Up next, Duke will travel to Atlanta, Ga., to take on Notre Dame and No. 22 Georgia Tech next weekend to close out the 2020-21 regular season.
