DURHAM, N.C. – Fresh off a historic weekend at the Tobacco Road Challenge, Duke women's track & field has earned its highest regular season national ranking in school history, as the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has named them the No. 17 team in the country. The women have also earned the top ranking in the Southeast Region, moving up from No. 2 last week.
The previous high for the Blue Devils was No. 19, set in the indoor season on February 18, 2014. The team is one of three schools to move up more than 10 spots in the rankings from last week, as Duke ranked No. 30 on April 5.
With the move into the top-25, the Blue Devils are one of five ranked programs in the ACC, behind only No. 13 Miami and No. 14 Florida State. No. 23 NC State and No. 25 Notre Dame round out the ACC's representatives in the rankings.
Monday's ranking comes as a result of a strong performance this past weekend in the Tobacco Road Challenge at Morris Williams Stadium. The women set two program records, in the 4x100 meter relay and the 400m, while earning 16 top-five marks in program history. Senior
Erin Marsh and graduate student
Zoe Hughes set top-10 marks nationally in the heptathlon, with Marsh's total of 5,748 ranking sixth in the country and Hughes' total of 5,541 ranking 10th. The record-breaking 4x100m relay team of
Halle Bieber,
Brittany Aveni,
Elena Brown-Soler and
Cha'Mia Rothwell earned the 10th-fastest time in the country at 44.02 seconds.
The Blue Devils are set to return to action on April 16, beginning a two-day stint at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va.
