Duke Hammer Throw Shines on Day One at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Duke track and field throws unit shined on the opening day of the Penn Relays Thursday as the Blue Devils revised the program record books on the men's side while the men's and women's squads combined to garner four top-10 placements in the hammer throw.

TOP PERFORMANCES

Graduate student Jide Akinjisola headlined the day's performances with a runner-up finish in the men's hammer throw.
Akinjisola opened the competition with a bang as he registered a throw of 61.59m (202 feet) on his first attempt. The throw marked the Providence, R.I., product's third top-five placement of the season, while improving upon his school record in the process.
Classmate Myles Schreck also had a solid showing, coming through in the clutch with a toss measuring 58.20m (190-11 feet) on his sixth and final attempt – good for a ninth-place finish.
Junior Moorea Mitchell led the charge for Duke on the women's side, as she finished fourth among the 22-member field.
Mitchell made her second throw of the afternoon her best and produced a throw of 58.51m (191-11 feet).
Graduate student Jordyn Shubrick made her third throw the charm, launching the hammer 58.15m (190-9 feet) to place sixth overall.
In the lone track event of the evening, the women's 400m hurdles, graduate student Arianna Gragg paced the Blue Devils with an eighth-place finish via a personal-best time of 58.96 seconds.
