EUGENE, Ore. – It was a historic day for Duke track and field at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships, as
Lauren Hoffman locked down her spot in the women's 400m hurdles final with another solid race on Friday.
Competing in the semifinal race, Hoffman continued her stellar season and raised the bar once again. The graduate student from Haymarket, Va., finished in 56.19 to advance to Saturday's final, becoming the first Duke athlete since Molly Lehman in 2009 to advance to the final of a running event while still representing the Duke track and field program. The event is set for 5:51 p.m. ET.
Emily Cole and
Chyler Turner also represented Duke on the second day of competition at Hayward Field. The pair closed the door on their respective outdoor seasons that saw them earn All-ACC status and garner All-America Second Team honors.
Turner commenced action for the Duke athletes in the first round of the 100m hurdles and finished in 13.64 seconds to advance to the next round. The freshman took her performance to the next level in the 100m hurdles final as she clocked a personal-best 13.36 seconds to finish third overall. Although she gave a valiant effort, Turner just missed out on making the U20 team.
Cole took part in the first round of the 3000m steeplechase race and produced her second-fastest time of the season. The junior delivered a run of 9:58.15 against a highly competitive field and finished just two spots shy of qualifying for the final.
